WJRE went
on-the-air October 1, 1966, providing the Tri-County area with
its first local FM signal. WJRE operated at 92.1 on the FM dial
with 3000 watts of power, until October 1, 1996, when it moved
to 93.9 on the FM dial, with 3100 watts of power from a 453-foot
tower northeast of Kewanee, substantially increasing WJRE's coverage
area.
WJRE then
moved down the dial to 102.5 on May 1, 2003 at midnight to a tower
south of Galva, with 3,000 watts of power.
On Thursday, November 3, 2005 at 4 p.m., WJRE flipped the switch
to its new transmitter on Beach Street in Kewanee, sharing facilities
with sister station WKEI. WJRE now operates at 6,000 watts. WJRE
also utilizes the Radio
Data System, or RDS.
