A lapdog - that's how the Republican Candidate for Illinois Comptroller
describes the incumbent and her opponent in the fall election.
Itasca State Senator Carole Pankau made a campaign stop in Kewanee
yesterday - she says Comptroller Dan Hynes should instead be a watchdog and
questions the billions of dollars in new programs Governor Rod Blagohevich has
either implemented or proposed.
Pankau says Hynes hasn't done any of that, and also hasn't done
enough to make sure things like medicaid payments are made on time.
The Housing Authority of Henry County could soon be the local agent for a federal
initiative that gives more people a chance at first time home ownership.
Housing Authority Executive Director Kate Barton says she's waiting on final
approval for her agency to be a part of the "American Down Payment Dream
Initiative" - which gives new home owners financial and other assistance.
Barton says she'll be able to release more information when she knows she'll
get approval, but says if that's reality, her office will be the primary agent
of the program for the entire tri-county area.

(Rolling Meadows, IL) -- The governor isn't answering questions
about hiring scandal, and his office can't answer them. Governor Blagojevich
is brushing off questions about his administration's ever-changing explanation
for questions about possible illegal political influence over who got state
jobs. His staff doesn't have any more specific answers either. The Governor's
Office has offered different versions on how and when the administration stopped
looking at applicants. New reports say the governor's people were looking
at applications in 2004, 18 months after the administration said it had stopped.
(Rolling Meadows, IL) -- About a month before the next school year, Illinois
Governor Rod Blagojevich has signed the bill he says will open pre-school
to every kid in the state. The governor says Illinois is the first in the
country to offer universal pre-school. But critics lime Republican State Representative
Suzanne Bassi say Pre-School for All really isn't. She also says most of the
45-million-dollars will go to kids in Chicago, most other districts won't
see any money. The Governor's Office says that's true, but says everyone can
apply to Pre-School for All. Blagojevich has made his pre-school plan one
of the major planks in his re-election campaign this year.
(Springfield, IL) -- Illinois has made the latest cut for a billion-dollar
clean coal plant. Federal officials say Tuscola and Mattoon are two of four
choices to possibly host the FutureGen project. The government plans to spend
almost a billion- dollars to build a zero-emission coal fired power plant.
Two sites in Texas makeup the rest of the final four. Illinois is one of the
largest coal producing states in the country. The governor says he's keeping
his finger crossed. FutureGen officials hope to make a final decision by mid-2007.
(Chicago, IL) -- Illinois could soon offer big breaks on gas taxes, but you
won't cash in. The Governor's Office says it will work with lawmakers this
fall to scale back aviation fuel taxes for United Airlines. The tax deal,
which could save United millions, is part of the package that kept the airline's
headquarters in Illinois. The airline is just coming out of bankruptcy, and
employs 16-thousand people. The administration says it was important to keep
it in the state. Lawmakers in Springfield pushed a number of plans this spring,
but without any help from the Governor's Office they all died before lawmakers
could vote on them.
(Washington, DC) -- Former Illinois Governor Jim Edgar is once again being
talked about for a possible move to Washington. The perennial candidate for
high profile Republican posts is said to be one of a handful of people in
considerations for Transportation secretary. President Bush still has to fill
Norm Mineta's job. Edgar says he is surprised to hear he's on any kind of
list. There are a number of others being talked about in Washington, DC, including
Labor Secretary Elaine Chao, and former Kansas Governor Bill Graves.
(St. Louis, MO) -- The race to get the power back on for thousands of people
in and around St. Louis has claimed a life. Ameren (AM-er-uhn) says a utility
crewman died when he stepped on a live power line while trying to get power
back to folks in suburban St. Louis. Another crewman was burned by a line
while he was climbing a pole in Missouri. Ameren says the death and injury
are the first for the massive cleanup. Four-thousand utility crewmen are working
in the two states. The storms and heat that caused the power outages are blamed
for four deaths of their own.
(Mt. Vernon, IL) -- Police in Southern Illinois say they have three suspects
in a murder in Mt. Vernon, but have only one in custody. Detectives arrested
Christopher Watkins on Monday, and got arrest warrants for Krysta Donoho and
Demetrus Cole. Police think they are hiding in St. Louis. The three are prime
suspects in the murder of Randall Farrar, a local developer and philanthropist.
Officers found Farrar dead in his home. They say someone shot him twice in
the head. Police are not guessing at a motive.
(Knox County, IL) -- A shotgun-wielding man is in jail after firing a few
shots and holding police at bay for hours in rural Knox County. Police say
the standoff began when Jeffery Sheppard got into a fight with his wife. At
some point, he pulled out his 12-gauge shotgun and started shooting. He didn't
hit anyone, but the police came rushing to his home in Dahinda in Knox County.
Sheppard then kept police outside for hours. They eventually convinced him
to give up. His wife got away without being hurt. Sheppard is now behind bars
in Knox County's jail. Prosecutors say he's likely looking at several charges
including weapons charges.
(Chicago, IL) -- The Chicago City Council could vote tomorrow on a bill that
would require dog owners to have a microchip implanted in their pets. Supporters
say it would help owners recover lost pets and help police prosecute those
who fight or abandon the animals. But many dog owners think a microchip law
is too intrusive. The measure is the latest in a string of non-traditional
issues taken up by the council, including trans fats in cooking oil, uniforms
for cab drivers, and loud street musicians.
